Academy of Finance listed among Top 6 best teams of HSBC Case Competition 2019
HSBC Case Competition 2019 is an annual mind team-game of business cases for students of economic universities hosted by HSBC. This competition was initiated since 2009 and conducted in English.

The contest has always been appreciated by the leaders and economic specialists, so that it has been involved by Hong Kong, China, India, the U.S, the UK, Singapore, Korea, Thailan and Vietnam. This year, the regional round was started in January 2019 sort-listing 12 best teams to take part in the final round to be held in Ho Chi Minh city on April 6-8. The world final competition will be organized in May 2019 in Hong Kong.

Top 6 best teams of HSBC Case Competition 2019

2019 is the first year that AOF takes part in HSBC Case Competition in addition to the familiar teams from Foreign Trade University, National Economics University, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, RMIT, … The AOF’s team includes: Nguyen Cam Tu (CQ53/11.17 – Team leader), Nguyen Minh Anh (DDP0102), To Do Hong Van (CQ55/11/07) and Nguyen Truong Minh (CQ55/21.06CLC) with the great supports from AOF Youth Union and advisor Tran Thi Phuong Lien M.A.

After brilliant winning of the Northern regional competition, the AOF team stepped into the final round with three sub-competitions which were firstly taken place on April 6th. AOF team beaten other opponents from National Economics Universities, Banking Academy and RMIT with their excellent case study of Pizza Hut. AOF team and FTU team together were the best winners of the North to take part in second competition taking place on April 7th.

The Final round taking place in Ho Chi Minh city consisted of three sub-competitions selecting three best teams out of 12. Each competition had one case that participants had to play the role of advisors, each team had three hours analyzing, discussing and addressing certain business case at a company and then demonstrate their work before the judges within 20 minutes and answer the counter-questions within 10 minutes.

In the next sub-competition taking place on April 7th, with the case study of Cathay Pacific, AOF team presentation was highly appreciated by the judges with their impressive ideas and measures that others did not expect making them the TOP 6 best teams of the game in 2019.

The game was a valuable experience for the AOF students where they can practice analytic capacity and case addressing under time pressure, it is an essential skills for any students of economics and finance. Student Nguyen Cam Tu – AOF team leader share her ideas: “With less than one month preparing for the final round, we were advised and inspired from great mentors who are excellent specialists from big corporations. We also participated in workshops to build up our presentation skills in English regarding business strategic cases.”

In addition to great opportunities, student Minh Anh, an AOF team member share her experience of difficulties when participating a significant competition for the first time: “We had to spend no time and effort to get used to the game rules, to master analytic and problem solving skills. It was this great effort, together with team solidity and sympathy that made the great achievement for the team in this competition.”

After the final round in Ho Chi Minh city, RMIT team was honored the winner, this was their third consecutive winnings of HSBC Business Case Competition making them the Vietnam’s representatives to attend the regional competition scheduled on May 31st in Hong Kong. The runner-up was FTU team and the third-place was FTU Ho Chi Minh. Mr. Pham Hong Hai, CEO HSBC Vietnam share his thought: “With this contest, we expect to bring about opportunities to practice and empower the students with essential skills as well as real career experience and challenges before getting the jobs. With great pressure of team working to solve the complicated professional situations, the students are expected to develop their group working skills and improve the EQ. These are the needed skills for the technology age when computers are replacing human in many fields.”

For the AOF team, as the new participant of the contest, their way to the TOP 6 is the affirmation regarding capacity and position the academy with more then 55 years of history. This will be the stable step for AOF to reach higher peaks in the following years.
